During the great battle of Lanka between Lord Rama's army and the demon king Ravana, Ravana's son Meghanada (Indrajit) unleashed a devastating celestial weapon (Shakti) that struck Lakshman, Rama's beloved brother. Lakshman fell unconscious and was near death.
The Royal Physician of Lanka, Sushena, examined Lakshman and declared that only the Sanjeevani herb, found far away in the Dronagiri range of the Himalayas, could save him. But it had to be brought before sunrise. Lord Hanuman, the fastest and most powerful, immediately volunteered.
He flew at the speed of thought to the Himalayas. However, upon reaching the Dronagiri mountain, he realized the magical herbs were glowing and he could not identify which specific plant was the Sanjeevani. With time running out and unwilling to risk Lakshman's life by bringing the wrong herb, Hanuman did the unthinkable.
Using his colossal strength, he uprooted the entire Dronagiri mountain and carried it in one hand as he flew back across the sky. He reached Lanka just before dawn. Sushena quickly found the herb, crushed it, and revived Lakshman, bringing immense joy to Lord Rama and the entire army.
लंका के महायुद्ध में जब रावण के पुत्र मेघनाद (इंद्रजीत) ने वीर लक्ष्मण पर अपनी शक्ति का प्रहार किया, तो वे मूर्छित होकर गिर पड़े और उनके प्राण संकट में आ गए।
लंका के राजवैद्य सुषेण ने परीक्षण कर बताया कि केवल हिमालय पर्वत की द्रोणागिरि श्रृंखला में पाई जाने वाली 'संजीवनी बूटी' ही उनके प्राण बचा सकती है। परंतु यह बूटी सूर्योदय से पूर्व लानी आवश्यक थी। तब हनुमान जी ने यह जिम्मेदारी ली और वायु वेग से हिमालय की ओर उड़ चले।
द्रोणागिरि पर्वत पर पहुंचने पर हनुमान जी ने देखा कि वहां कई जड़ी-बूटियां चमक रही थीं, जिसके कारण वे संजीवनी बूटी को पहचान नहीं पाए। समय कम था और लक्ष्मण जी के प्राण खतरे में थे, इसलिए हनुमान जी ने एक अद्भुत निर्णय लिया।
उन्होंने अपनी अपार शक्ति से पूरे द्रोणागिरि पर्वत को ही उखाड़ लिया और उसे एक हाथ पर रखकर आकाश मार्ग से लंका की ओर उड़ चले। सूर्योदय से ठीक पहले वे लंका पहुंच गए। वैद्य सुषेण ने संजीवनी बूटी निकालकर लक्ष्मण जी का उपचार किया और वे जीवित हो उठे, जिससे श्रीराम और पूरी वानर सेना में हर्ष की लहर दौड़ गई।
